TOURNAMENT HONOREE - OLIVER LUCK

Oliver Luck, former Houston Oiler and All-American collegiate
football player, has led a career as accomplished off the
football field as on.
Luck, a record-setting All-American quarterback at West
Virginia University, earned the prestigious National Football
Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete award during his senior year
(1981) for his academic and athletic prowess. His level
of achievement was so high that Luck was named to the Academic
All-American Hall of Fame.

He earned a B.A. degree from West Virginia University, graduating
with highest honors, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After college Luck
went on to become the Houston Oiler's second pick of the 1982 draft. He
was also an NCAA Top 5 award winner in 1982. Luck, a backup QB for the
majority of his career, but is in both the NFL and Oiler record books.
During his off-seasons with the Oilers Luck attended law school, earning his doctorate from the University of Texas School of Law. After a government-awarded fellowship to study the legal profession in Dusseldorf, Germany and a stint with a leading law firm in Munich, Luck went on to open his own law practice there.
In 1991 Luck moved from law to sports administration, becoming the
first general manager of the Frankfurt Galaxy, one of the World League
of American Football's foundation teams. His success with that franchise
led to more success for the league, later renamed NFL International,
in Europe. He founded the Rhein Fire in Dusseldorf in 1995 and not
long after was appointed president of NFL International.
During his tenure with the NFL in Europe, Luck made his mission to
the improve the league's operating structure, develop sponsorship and
television opportunities, and work to make NFL Europe League games
a fan-friendly experience. He was instrumental in bringing several
corporate partners, including Coca-Cola, Wrangler Jeans, Sony, American
Express and MasterCard, to the NFL Europe fold.
In 2001 Luck returned to the States to head the Harris County Sports
Authority, the governmental entity created in 1997 to provide the financing,
construction and management oversight of the three large sports and
entertainment venues in Houston: Minute Maid Park (home of the Houston
Astros), Reliant Stadium, (home of the Houston Texans and the Houston
Livestock Show and Rodeo), and the new Downtown multi- purpose arena
(home of the Houston Rockets and Comets).
Luck is married to the former Kathy Wilson and they have four children;
Andrew, Mary Ellen, Emily and Addison. In addition to his professional
pursuits, Luck is actively involved as a coach for youth sports. |
