Introduction
First the bad news:
Figuring out what you want to do and who you are outside
of sports may take some
time. Let’s face it, you have been playing ball a
long time. And consider this - many of the non-athlete
types you know stopped playing serious ball years ago,
and this gave them time to figure these career things out
for themselves – you have not had that luxury (you
may have other luxury’s, but not that one).
Most people learn about career
and job options because they simply have to. Athletics
at some point in their
life was no longer an option, if they were playing in
high school or college. Getting paid to do something – anything
- became the top priority. So they got started on the
journey. The path you are now beginning. If you know
what you want to pursue post sports – congratulations
and count yourself lucky - and among the small percentage
of people who do have such an idea. However, if you do
not have a clue yet, try not to sweat it. Most everyone
struggles to figure out their unique niche in life, and
some people never do – but that’s because
they choose not to work hard at it.

The good news is if you do work
hard at it, you will figure it out. You will – because
the answers are all out there, and the help is out there
too. Some former players we know, simply made it their
goal when leaving the game, to figure it out – “who
they are in this world other than being a ball player”.
It’s a worthy goal. If you can afford not to work
right away, then take the time you need to learn about
yourself and the unlimited options out there for you. If
you must get a job soon, then make it your goal to figure
it out along the way - and use each new job you take as
an opportunity to learn more about yourself and the skills
you enjoy using. Either way, if you focus on figuring it
out – you will make it happen.
